modem connection for xbox live

How do I work my direct modem connection for xbox live without restarting the modem? I've been connecting my Xbox 360 to the modem directly, but I always have to power cycle the modem after reconnecting the ethernet cable and my dad's getting scared off messing up the power plug. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate them. Please don't suggest 'get a router' because I am going to get one soon, just not sure when.
