Registration error: 408 Request timeout - DNS issue?

Postby victorhooi » Tue May 11, 2010 2:34 am

heya,

I'm using X-Lite 3.0 under Windows 7, to connect to a Pennytel account.

On attempting to login, I got a:

Code: Select all
Registration error:408 Request timeout

I did a google search, and found this site (http://www.voipuser.org/forum_topic_5994.html), which seems to suggest setting the DNS server manually for that network connection.

I checked the network settings, and the DNS was set to 10.1.1.1 (our ADSL router's IP address) - it's DHCP, so everything's set automatically, more or less. Anyhow, I changed the network settings under Windows to manual, and set the public IP address for the DNS server for our ISP (TPG), and it seemed to work. I changed them back to automatic (which means they'd revert to 10.1.1.1), and it still seems to work, but I assume that's some kind of caching, and I'm not sure if it'll fail in the future now.

Anyhow, can anyone tell me why X-Lite behaves this way, or if there's a better way of setting it up in future so that it can resolve with full DHCP.

Cheers,
Victor

It makes very little difference to X-Lite (or any application that uses TCP/IP connectivity, for that matter) how the network interface is configured: automatically, through DHCP, or manually. What could matter is the actual values and that, again, has nothing to do with X-lite. An error 408 is a connectivity problem and, of all settings that come through DHCP, that could be affected by the DNS server values. You should look at the settings of your TCP/IP interface and see what you get there (e.g., if the DNS servers that you get from your DHCP server are different from those you typed manually).
